Fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI), where your included airport pickup gets you into Egypt’s capital and ready for the first afternoon with the group.

The trip ends in Hurghada, and you can depart from Hurghada International Airport (HRG) any time on Day 9 or extend your stay on your own.
Departure airport transportation is not included, but your Trip Leader can help you arrange a taxi or local transit.
Moderate. Expect a lot of walking at pyramids, temples, museums, and bazaars, plus kayaking on the Nile, several early mornings, long drives, and hot desert sun. One night is spent in a shared open-air space on a traditional felucca.
You’ll have a few free evenings in Cairo and Luxor, time to wander Aswan, and a little Red Sea breathing room—but most days are structured around sightseeing, travel, and early starts.

Journey by bus to Nubia’s southern border to experience one of Egypt’s most awe-inspiring monuments, the Great Temple of Abu Simbel. Admire the precision of this rock-cut temple built by King Ramesses II.
Walk to the Small Temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II’s Great Royal Wife, Queen Nefertari.
Return to Aswan for some free time to explore the city. Take the opportunity to see the Philae Temple Light Show or browse the night market for something to bring home.

Spend the day relaxing on the sundeck, watching rural Egyptian life play out on the banks of the Nile. Stop and explore islands that dot the landscape and feast on hearty vegetarian meals prepared on the boat.
Take in the sunset over the Nile. Tonight, you’ll sleep under a canopy of stars on the boat’s deck as people have done for thousands of years.
Itinerary update for 2027 trips: The full-day felucca sailing experience will be removed. On this day, the group will drive from Aswan to Luxor. Upon arrival at Luxor, the group will tour the Temple of Karnak and enjoy an included dinner this evening.
Wake up to the sun on your face and enjoy breakfast on board the felucca. Say goodbye to the Nubian boat crew and make your way to the open-air Luxor Museum.
Visit the largest religious building ever constructed-–the Temple of Karnak. This city of temples took more than 2,000 years to build. Explore the Avenue of Sphinxes and the Great Temple of Amun, two of the most impressive sections of the complex.
Head into the town of Luxor for a free evening and a chance to see the Luxor Temple at night or enjoy a drink at one of the rooftop terraces overlooking the Nile.
Itinerary update for 2027 trips: This will be your second day in Luxor. Today the group will visit the Valley of the Kings in the morning. For lunch, you will be welcomed into a local family's house for a home-cooked meal. For the afternoon, you will have time to explore more of Luxor as you please.

After breakfast, cross to the west bank of the Nile and make your way to the Valley of Kings, the burial place of Egyptian royalty. Spend the morning visiting ancient temples and tombs.

Feel welcomed into a local family’s home for another unique cultural experience and share a home-cooked Egyptian lunch. Then, it’s off to the beach resort town of Hurghada.
Itinerary update for 2027 trips: On this day, you will drive to Hurghada, a beach resort town on the Red Sea. Upon arrival, you will check into the hotel and have the afternoon to enjoy the beach before your included dinner in the evening.
Wake up in your resort located on the shores of the Red Sea and enjoy breakfast at the accommodation.
Cruise across the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea on a snorkeling adventure. Discover vibrant coral reefs and colorful marine life that await beneath the surface. Relax on deck between stops, soak up the sunshine, and discover some of Egypt’s most beautiful underwater scenery in warm, turquoise waters.
Gather with your group for a final dinner in Egypt as you share what you’ve learned and reflect on your journey.
Wake up early on your final morning in Egypt for one last swim in the Red Sea.

Seven nights are in shared hotel rooms, then one night is spent on your group’s private felucca with blankets provided and shared bathroom facilities onboard.

This was the trip of my dreams. It was a very great itinerary. Writing this review would never express how grateful I am for the under30experiences and our tour guide Ahmed. Ahmed was beyond amazing. He knew the history so well, was great with keeping us on track time wise and literally felt like our dad towards the end of our trip. Our group got close with Ahmed included. Only thing I wish we saw was Hatshepsut’s tomb but that was closed while we were there so makes sense why we didn’t see it of course. Overall beyond 5/5 recommend this trip. What should I pack?
Please be eco-friendly!
We recommend using a travel backpack for your convenience or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.
Below are our staff picks of the best items on the market that we travel with. All products selected are 3 ounces or less to comply with TSA carry-on size and are organically inspired when possible.
Do not forget a water bottle, sunscreen, sandals, sunglasses, and a hat!
Keep in mind that Egypt is Muslim country, which means more conservative dress is the norm. Though it is not required, we do recommend our travelers to dress more modestly than they would at home. Despite the heat, avoid short shorts and tight or revealing clothing, and instead opt for loose, flowing pants, skirts, and shirts everywhere you go. Loose shorts and tanks tops are acceptable, but please bring along a shawl or scarf to cover our shoulders when it is required.
Egypt is known for being dusty and sandy, therefore we recommend avoiding wearing white clothing.

How much should I budget for food and activities?
We generally recommend $350 USD.
2 dinners and 6 lunches will be at your expense. Average meals range from $8-15 USD, depending on your restaurant selection. If you are eating from local street food vendors, then the price will be less expensive.
Optional activities range from a few dollars to enter museums to $20 for touring Philae Temple at night. The more expensive optional activities are for those that would like to go scuba diving while in Hurghada with prices costing a minimum of $60.
Do I need a power adapter?
Yes. For Egypt there are two associated plug types C and F. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. Egypt operates on a 220V supply voltage and 50Hz.
What should I expect from the overnight experience aboard the felucca?
All travelers will be sleeping in a common space on the deck of the boat for one night. There are shared bathrooms facilities on the boat. The felucca experience is a private boat for only your group.
What if it rains during our overnight felucca experience?
Though rain is very uncommon, if there is a rain storm, the boat is equipped with a cover to protect against the elements. This protective cover can also be used for strong winds or sandy storms.
What is the nightlife like in Egypt?
There are many options for entertainment after the sun goes down in Egypt. There are night tours in both Aswan and Luxor to visit the famous temples underneath the lights. Major cities such as Cairo and Hurghada have night clubs with live music, DJs, and dancing.
I noticed the trip begins in Cairo and ends in Hurghada. How do you recommend I arrange my flights?
We suggest booking a round-trip ticket arriving and departing from Cairo. Then book a separate domestic flight from Hurghada to Cairo. Additionally, you can take a local bus from Hurghada to Cairo. The travel time is approximately 6-8 hours.
The Hurghada Airport (HRG) is an international airport, so you can arrange for departing flights directly from this airport as well.
Can I drink the water in Egypt?
No. Though it is safe for bathing, brushing your teeth, and rinsing off fruits and vegetables, it is not recommended to drink tap water. Please bring a reusable water bottle (and even a reusable straw) and join us in our efforts to be environmentally friendly and keep Egypt beautiful.
Is there a tipping culture in Egypt?
Yes. Tipping 10–15% of your bill total is customary at cafes and restaurants, and loose change is acceptable for food purchases from street vendors and markets.
Can we find ATMs in Egypt?
Yes, ATMs are available in Egypt. There are fees associated with transactions.
Understand that Egypt operates mostly on cash, however credit cards are accepted at more modern shopping malls, restaurants, and hotels.
How welcoming is Egypt to LGBTQIA+ travelers?
Egypt is not a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers who wish to openly express their sexuality and/or gender identity outside of a very rigid, heterosexual binary.
Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travelers in Egypt. Though homosexuality is not officially outlawed, gay men and transgender individuals have been prosecuted using debauchery and public morals laws and given long prison sentences.
We recommend LGBTQIA+ travelers exercise caution and discretion while in Egypt.
What is the common dress style for men?
Clothing among the locals is generally conservative and traditional. You will see men wearing loose trousers and long sleeves.
Gallabiyahs, the traditional man clothing, is a loose-fitting, long dress or shirt. Our male travelers can purchase one of these if they would like to dress like a local.
Though, we suggest that male travelers on our trip respect these customs and do their best to dress similar to the locals, it is not required to do so. Male travelers are okay to wear shorts and tank tops in Egypt.
Are women expected to dress more culturally appropriate?
While you will see many women wearing hijabs in Egypt, there are also plenty of women who do not wear them. You will notice that for the most part (outside of the international bars and restaurants), Egyptian women dress conservatively, with chest, shoulders, and legs covered.
However, it is acceptable for tourists in Egypt to wear shorts and tanks tops due to the heat in the region. In short, dressing modestly is encouraged but not required.
What kind of food can I expect in Egypt?
Eat like a local with delicious Egyptian dishes such as koshary, hummus, shawarma, and falafels.
Breakfasts will be served at your accommodations. Dinners are enjoyed at local restaurants consisting of Egyptian cuisine and will range from modern restaurants to local-style food stalls.
There will be two meals shared with a local family, providing a truly authentic experience. These will be dinner with a Nubian family in Aswan on Day 3 and a home-cooked lunch in Luxor on Day 7.
One dinner and one breakfast will be served during your overnight train ride on Day 2.
For the felucca sailing experience along the Nile on Day 5, a local Nubian family will prepare lunch, dinner, and breakfast the next morning aboard the boat. Meals on the boat will be vegetarian.
Please note that healthy snack options are very limited at most of the stops during your trip. Most places primarily offer chips, cookies, ice cream, and soda, with water readily available. For travelers who prefer healthier options, we recommend packing your own snacks, like granola bars or nuts, so your not just eating processed foods.

What is it like to travel in Egypt during Ramadan?
Traveling to Egypt during this Muslim holiday can be a wonderful cultural experience, but there are a few things to know...
During Ramadan, establishments close earlier in the afternoon to allow people to go home and pray. Then, everything opens back up at sundown and people happily break their fast.
Please note that it may be more difficult to find alcohol and nightlife in an Islamic country during Ramadan.
Ramadan does not begin until the last three days of the March 2023 trip. For the April 2023 trip, Ramadan ends on Day 7, where you'll get to see people celebrating the joyous Eid al-Fitr holiday.
Which type of luggage is best?
The lighter the better! If you only have a rolling suitcase that will work, but if you can get your hands on a more mobile bag, like a large backpack, that would be better. We take all forms of transportation, and move often on this trip. Loading your suitcase on and off all these modes of transportation can be challenging.
You'll also want a daypack for your personal gear, food, and drinks for the day.
What is the official language spoken in Egypt?
The official language in Egypt is Arabic. Your Trip Leader will be fluent in both Arabic and English and can help you with any translations if needed.
When is the best time to visit Egypt?
The best time to visit Egypt is during winter from October to April, when temperatures are lower. The most popular time for tourists is December and January.
Do I need a visa to travel to Egypt?
A visa is required when traveling as a tourist from Canada or the United States. A visa can be obtained upon arrival at Cairo International Airport (CAI) for $25 and will be valid for up to 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Egypt.
Applicable travelers can also apply for an E-Visa.
What is the currency in Egypt?
The Egyptian Pound (EGP).
