This is a fast-paced, high-activity trip. Expect two days of Class II-IV rafting, rappelling down four waterfalls, zip lining, and sustained walking in heat, humidity, and rain. You should be comfortable being active for long stretches and carrying your own luggage.
You'll get beach time in Puerto Viejo, a free afternoon to explore or surf, and a little breathing room at the river lodge and in Turrialba between big activity days.
This trip moves between Puerto Viejo, the Pacuare River, and Turrialba, with Turrialba as the inland hub for rafting, canyoning, and coffee-country time.

Wake up early and embark on a two-day whitewater rafting adventure. Raft Class II, III, & IV rapids through the rainforest to your remote eco-lodge on the Pacuare River.
The lodge is a model of sustainable tourism with hydroelectric power and quaint, rustic accommodations. Enjoy a self-guided walk to nearby waterfalls and natural pools.

This trip was one of the most amazing and incredible trips and experiences. I am an avid traveler and have done both group and solo travel and this ranks as one of the best trips I have taken. I booked the Costa Rica Rain Forest trip on a whim 2 weeks prior to the trip leaving and I am beyond glad I did...The group is made up of like-minded individuals who share both a love for travel as well as traveling with "strangers" (who quickly become close friends). Don't be fooled by the name, "under30" as the average age on my trip was around 30. I was nervous that I would be on a trip of younger 20 year olds who just wanted to party and drink like some other young adult group travel companies have the reputation for; however that was not the case at all! The trip was made up of young professionals who both wanted to explore the county and culture as well as have a good time. Costa Rica is a beautiful and diverse country with some of the nicest and happiest people... This trip allowed me to disconnect from technology and the "real world" and reconnect with myself. Jaguar Rescue Center ~ 30 USD: The Jaguar Rescue Center is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals. With a focus on monkeys, sloths, other mammals, birds and reptiles, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the waters of the Caribbean.
Rent a bike ~ 10USD: The main town of Puerto Viejo is an eclectic vibrant beach town with a relaxed atmosphere, the Puerto Viejo area boasts a flat 12km stretch of lush tropical coastline which goes all the way from Playa Negra to Manzanillo. The perfect way to discover and explore the area is by bicycle!

We recommend using a travel backpack for your convenience or a medium-sized suitcase if you prefer. A daypack is also essential for carrying everyday items. Space is limited on transportation, so there is a limit of one main piece of luggage per person. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage.

Do I need to worry about a visa?
When traveling with a passport, citizens of the United States, Canada, and most Latin American and European countries are entitled to stay in Costa Rica for 90 days. They must enter the country with a departure ticket and a valid passport that does not expire within 30 days of their arrival in Costa Rica.

How much should I budget for food and activities?
Bring cash with you! We recommend you have at least $300 USD cash on you during the trip for lunches, snacks, optional activities, souvenirs, etc.
All places accept USD so you do not need to convert to the local currency.
Is tipping customary in Costa Rica?
Tipping is not expected though it is greatly appreciated, especially since tourism and hospitality are one of the leading industries in Costa Rica. Adding 10% gratuity at restaurants, local guides and drivers is a suitable tip.
What languages are spoken in Costa Rica?
Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica. English is widely spoken in many tourist areas and hotels.Knowing a second language is not required to enjoy this trip.
What is the nightlife like?
Puerto Viejo have several nightlife options. Most of our trips fall on Wednesday to Sunday and coincide with Friday and Saturday nights. Keep in mind it is a small town so don’t expect Miami Beach.
Nightlife in the high season, Christmas until Easter, is much more lively than other times of the year.
Please drink responsibly and remember you’ll need to be up at a reasonable hour the next morning to join the group.
Can I opt out of an included activity?
Of course! This trip is your trip, and you don’t have to participate in anything you don’t want to. Just be aware that opting out of included activities will not change the price of your trip.

What is the physical activity level of this trip?
Moderate. Some travelers will find the hills on the hikes challenging, while more athletic people will not find them particularly difficult.
Weather conditions like heat, humidity, and rain can change trail conditions and the intensity of the activity. If you work at a desk all day, expect to do a lot more physical activity than normal.
Our Trip Leaders are great at challenging you while keeping you safe and waiting for hikers who like to take their time.
What type of transportation will we be taking?
You will be traveling by private ground transportation, public bus and taxi throughout your trip.
What type of weather should I expect?
The average temperature in Costa Rica’s Central Caribbean is 75-85 F during the day, and 60-75 F at night.Please expect showers and thunderstorms some days that pass through the rainforest.
What kind of food can I expect in Costa Rica?
Breakfast and dinners will be enjoyed at our guesthouse and river lodge. Lunches will be enjoyed at local restaurants with recommendations by your Trip Leaders.

We do our best to accommodate dietary restrictions. Most meals can be modified for special requests and food allergies.
Can I drink the water?
The local authorities state that the drinking water in Costa Rica is perfectly potable. Your Trip Leader will let you know if it is better to drink bottled water in certain areas.
We encourage our travelers to travel sustainably. Please bring a reusable water bottle.
Are the outlets compatible with American plugs, or should we bring adaptors?
Costa Rica uses 110-volt, 60-cycle electricity, just like in the US. Plugs are typically the 2 pronged flat types so US travelers will not typically need a converter or adapter.
What type of luggage is best?

What type of wildlife can I see in Costa Rica?
We can’t guarantee wildlife sightings, but the most commonly seen wildlife are White Face Capuchin Monkeys, Squirrel Monkeys, Sloths, Scarlett Macaws, Iguanas, and Toucans.
What is the bug situation?
We are staying in the jungle so expect to see lizards, frogs, or bugs. Costa Ricans prefer not to kill insects as they understand we are a visitor to their environment.
Long sleeves and pants are a good idea at dusk to protect from mosquitos. Please opt for eco-friendly, non-aerosol insect repellents.
Is laundry available?
Laundry is available at the hotel for an additional fee. Ask your Trip Leader for details.
What are the accommodations like?
For most of the trip, you will be staying in a remote boutique lodge in the city of Turrialba. The rooms will be doubles with ensuite bathrooms.
We'll stay in double accommodations at our white-water rafting river eco-lodge for 1 night.
Solo travelers are paired with someone of the same gender. You can request a friend to be your roommate upon checkout.
