Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of year for solo travel. While everyone else is stressing about how long it takes to cook a Thanksgiving feast or fight for the last can of cranberry sauce at the grocery store, I’m making my escape. As a vegetarian, I’ve never been particularly interested in Turkey Day and am eager to go somewhere far more exciting than the kitchen. Plus, with family gatherings already planned for the December holidays, Thanksgiving is the perfect time for a solo adventure. Let’s check out the best places to travel to for Thanksgiving, both in the USA and abroad, that will have you putting down the stuffing and hopping on a plane!

Thanksgiving is the Best Time for a Solo Trip

Thanksgiving offers the ideal opportunity for an extended trip. Most businesses, schools, and organizations are closed on and around Thanksgiving day, offering the ultimate opportunity for solo travel. If you strategically take off the days before Thanksgiving, you can get a full 9-day vacation for the cost of only 2.5 PTO days. And since the end of the year is fast approaching, it’s time to use or lose your remaining vacation days. Say it with me: we don’t waste vacation days!

Tips for Solo Travel at Thanksgiving

Don’t Go Too Far North

The further north you go, the less sunlight you’ll get in November. Except for northern lights hunters, the short daylight hours can make it difficult to fully enjoy a location.

Don’t Go Too Remote

Some destinations rely on high-volume tourism to stay open. Stick to year-round populated areas to avoid off-season closures catching you by surprise.

Book a Flight on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving is consistently the lowest-traffic travel day of the year. If you’re flexible with trip lengths, consider flying out after your turkey dinner or arriving home on Thanksgiving morning. You’ll avoid airport lines, save money, and still get to spend time with family.

Best International Destinations to Travel to for Thanksgiving

Europe: Less Crowds, More Charm

November is a fantastic time to explore Europe. The big summer crowds have gone home, and there’s a lull before the Christmas rush. This means you can enjoy a place with fewer tourists, lower prices, and a more relaxed vibe. You may even find that international flights at this time of year are cheaper than domestic ones!

Portugal

Ready for beaches, mountains, and charming cities? Portugal’s mild November weather makes it ideal for both outdoor activities and urban exploration. Lisbon and Porto offer rich history and stunning architecture, while the Algarve coast provides a quiet escape by the sea. This laid-back country is known for its welcoming atmosphere, making it a great choice for solo travelers.

Germany in November may seem a bit dreary at first, but don’t let the weather deter you. Escape inside world-class museums, old churches, fairytale castles, and cozy beer halls. Or, if you’re ready to get into the Christmas spirit early, head to the magical Christmas markets that open Thanksgiving week. Germans are also renowned for their organization and efficiency, making it easy to travel solo around the country.
