4 Reasons Why You Should Visit Spain Midyear

Spain is one of my favorite countries in the world. I’ve had the pleasure of returning to Spain every year since first living in this incredible country in 2013.

I lived in Barcelona for five months, and I’ve written an extensive guide about how to explore Barcelona like a local based on what I learned in my time living in this beautiful Mediterranean city.

Visiting Spain Midyear

For this article, I’m going to zoom out to tell you why Spain should be at the top of your travel list.

Although I’ve been able to explore and see new parts of Spain with every visit, I’m constantly surprised by new sights and experiences throughout the country.

In the last few years, I’ve always returned to Spain during the middle of the year mostly by coincidence. Yet, in my opinion, it’s the best time of the year to visit this beautiful country because it gives fellow travelers an inside look into the very best that Spain has to offer.

This is what I’ve experienced and why you should consider visiting Spain during the Spring & Summer months.

Weather

This is an easy one. An obvious benefit of visiting Spain during these months is you’ll get the full experience without having to worry about being limited by less than ideal temperatures.

Spain has some of the best beaches in Europe. The Balearic Islands are a sun-lovers paradise, and the possibilities for outdoor activities are endless.

The middle of the summer in the south of Spain can be a little too hot for some, (which is why we skip the hottest months in the south) but in other parts of the country the weather is perfect.

Oh, and did someone say…

Beaches

Spain’s coastline stretches for a thousand miles along the Mediterranean sea, and this isn’t even counting the island gems of Mallorca, Menorca, Formentera, and Ibiza.

I’ve personally been to several beaches throughout Spain. As a lifelong beach lover, I don’t think a trip to Spain would be complete without taking a dip in one of these treasures.

Some of my favorite beaches are in San Sebastian in the North of Spain, La Costa Brava about an hour north of Barcelona, and on the island paradise of Mallorca.

Festivities

It’s no surprise that the Spanish love to party and during the summer you can find a whole range of festivities going on throughout the country.

On June 23rd, Spain celebrates the start of summer with Saint. John’s Eve with fireworks on the beach throughout the country.

Too tame for you? Head up north to La Rioja where every year on June 29th thousands of people gather for a wine battle! Yep, thousands of gallons of wine are reserved for the event where locals color the town red with wine.

The famous Tomatina festival in Buñol also takes place every August.

Like I said, Spain loves to have a great time. Many Spaniards prefer to save their vacation time for the summer months, so you’ll be in good company.

Local Friends

The Spanish love good weather just like the rest of us. My Spanish friends like to tell me that in August the cities throughout Spain shut down because all the Spaniards are at the beach.

Although it’s a bit of an exaggeration, you can certainly feel the difference within the cities.

That said, if you go to the right places, you’ll be able to find more locals instead of tourists and - hey, maybe they’ll even treat you to a good Spanish wine!

Spain is an incredible country with plenty to offer throughout the year. However, if you’re a beach loving, sunbathing, festival crashing kind of person, I’d recommend visiting during the warmer months in the middle of the year.
