Jordan is home to stunning natural landscapes, world-renowned historical sites, and interesting religious monuments.
If sites like Petra or Wadi Rum and the vast landscapes don’t impress you, then the people definitely will. Jordanian people are among the most hospitable people in the world. You will be amazed at how many invitations you receive to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea.
A visa is required when traveling as a tourist from Canada or the United States. A visa can be obtained upon arrival at Amman Queen Alia Airport for $60 USD and will be valid for up to 30 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave Jordan.
The best time to visit Jordan is during the months of April and May. At this time of year, most of the rain has cleared up, yet the summer heatwaves still have not moved in.
September and October can still be hot but overall the weather is comfortable.
The official language in Jordan is Arabic. Your Trip Leader will be fluent and can help you with any translations if needed.
The lighter the better! If you only have a rolling suitcase that will work, but if you can get your hands on a more mobile bag, like a large backpack, that would be better. We take all forms of transportation.
You'll also want a daypack for your personal gear, food, and drinks for the day.
Sample Breakfast Menu: European breakfast in the hotels (Omelette, cheese, Jam and butter)
Sample Lunch Menu: Beef or chicken shawarma or Falafel sandwich dipped in hummus
Sample Dinner Menu: Traditional meals of rice, vegetables, beef or chicken, and green salad. One of Jordan’s authentic meals is maqluba, a dish that literally translates to ‘upside down’. It’s a hearty casserole with rice, vegetables, and chicken that is cooked, flipped, and served with either yoghurt or an Arab salad with tahini.
Jordan is an active travel destination. You will be walking a good amount and the climate can be hot. Be sure to pack accordingly. Here are a few essentials to know when packing.
Pack breathable clothing: clothing made of cotton, nylon, and polyester are good choices.
Bring layers for your two nights sleeping in the desert. Daytimes are warm but the nights will be chilly. Prepare.
Bring comfortable hiking or walking shoes.
Make sure you pack a Universal Adapter to charge your electronics. Jordan operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.
Refer to our packing list for more details.
While you will see many women wearing hijabs in Jordan, there are also plenty of women who do not wear them. You will notice that for the most part (outside of the international bars and restaurants), women dress conservatively, with chest, shoulders, and legs covered.
Yes, ATMs are available in Jordan. There are fees associated with withdrawals.
Do be aware that ATMs are less available in smaller towns and rural areas.
The Jordanian dinar (JD).
Yes. 10% is the standard. In restaurants, a 10% service charge is typically added to the bill. If you use a taxi service, it is considerate to round up to the closest dinar (JD). It is always appreciated to leave a tip for housekeeping when staying at hotels. 2 JD per night is reasonable.
While the water is drinkable and can be used for things like bathing, brushing teeth, and washing fruits and vegetables, it is advisable to drink bottled water when possible. Although the water is clean and safe, it can taste a bit salty and can sometimes have a peculiar taste.
Jordan is one of the few Middle Eastern countries where homosexuality is legal. That said, attitudes can be quite conservative and discrimination does occur. All couples, regardless of orientation, should avoid public affection in Jordan as this is extremely frowned upon. The capital city of Amman has gay-friendly venues and LGBTQ travelers should not be put off from traveling to Jordan.

U30X is such an amazing travel community. Once your trip is over, the experience is not. They keep in touch with their alumni & provide platforms for travel questions, personal development, & community connections in your own backyard! If you're a young person looking to travel I highly recommend U30X!
There are not enough ways for me to describe how amazing this company is. After my first trip I always told people, it wasn't about the location, but the experience that u30x gave me. I have some of the best experiences of my life with u30x, and now a passion for travel. Also, their alumni community and groups are awesome too!
Traveling with U30X has been life changing for me. I've made lifelong friends with both travelers and staff. I can't come up with enough good things to say about the company, the people, and the experiences I've had!
Just returned from my second trip with Under30Experiences. My first trip was to the Costa Rica rainforest. My most recent trip was to Iceland. Both trips were such an amazing experience. I loved learning about Iceland and its origins. I enjoy the small groups and I made some great new friends! Recommend them for anyone wanting to travel alone or with a couple of friends.
I was so scared to travel abroad alone and then I came across their website and they made international travel so easy! And the people I’ve met on the trips are some amazing individuals! I’ve done 6 of their trips and plan on continuing to do even more!!
My Hike the Inca Trail trip was beyond amazing, and I couldn't have asked for anything more from a trip. Our leaders made us all feel instantly comfortable, and the group was fantastic. The trip was well planned and the hike was unforgettable. Memories to last a lifetime.
